More Snow Falls in the Alps

Many parts of the Alps have seen some snow above 2,500m. It comes as more ski areas opened at the weekend. UPDATED

“The latest weather front has cleared off to the east, leaving many parts of the Alps with a mostly fine day, and just a few areas of cloud drifting around,” said Fraser Wilkin from weathertoski.co.uk on Monday.

“Higher up, there is also more fresh snow – with as much as 30cm in a few favoured spots.

“Just about all parts of the Alps saw some fresh snow on Sunday.

The northern Alps (e.g. Tignes, Chamonix, Verbier, Mürren, Engelberg, St Anton, Kaprun) saw about 15-25cm of new snow above 2300m with a dusting to as low as 1500m in places.

“Some central southern and south-eastern parts of the Alps saw a bit more still, with around 30cm at 2500m in parts of Carinthia and the Dolomites.”

Here’s the scene in Val Thorens in France after the recent snow:

And in Stubai in Austria:

This week the temperatures will remain mild in the Alps.

There could be some dusting of snow at altitude on Thursday.

Ski areas currently open in the Alps:

  • Austria: Pitztal, Hintertux, Stubai, Soelden, Kaunertal, Kitzsteinhorn & Molltal.
  • Italy: Passo Stelvio, Cervinia & Val Senalis.
  • Switzerland: Verbier, Zermatt, Saas-Fee, Titlis Glacier (Engleberg) & Diavolezza Glacier (St Moritz).

The Swiss resort of Verbier opened some slopes last Saturday, taking advantage of the recent snow.

It was all on non-glacier terrain.

The Lac des Vaux area is open, allowing skiers & snowboarders to make their first turns of the season.

“For the past few days, the peaks of Verbier have been adorned with a magnificent white blanket, with over 40 cm of fresh snow at Lac des Vaux,” said a statement from the resort as it announced the early opening.

“The 2025/2026 winter season can therefore officially begin in ideal conditions.”

Throughout November, the ski area will be open only on weekends if conditions allow, before daily openings begin on 29th November 2025.

In North America resorts are also opening as winter approaches.

Sunday saw the first resort in Canada open – Sunshine Village in Alberta:
