Most resorts in the Alps have now closed, though a handful of options still remain. Hintertux is ending year round skiing in 2026, but plans to be open until July.UPDATED
Last weekend Val Thorens, Tignes, Val d’Isere, Ischgl, Engelberg, Argentiere (Chamonix), and Pitztal called it a day.
Les2Alpes ended its ‘winter season’ on Sunday, but it then re-opened for its ‘spring season’ on Monday.
There were still some decent conditions for the time of year last weekend and now there is currently heavy snow falling at altitude in some parts of the Alps.
“Les 2 Alpes, one of the few resorts still offering skiing right now, reported 50cm of fresh snow on its glacier yesterday, with further snow forecast today,” said Fraser Wilkin from weathertoski.co.uk. on Wednesday.
“Many other parts of the Alps have also seen at least a bit of snow at altitude in the last day or two, heaviest in the west where the rain/snow level could dip below 2000m today.
“For the rest of this week, the weather in the Alps will remain unsettled with further showers in places.
“However, with temperatures rising again, any snowfall will be increasingly confined to glacial altitudes.”
Hintertux in Austria remains open but has announced it is ending year-round operations for 2026 and is set to close in July.
“After that, we’ll enjoy the glacier summer to the fullest off the slopes,” the resort says on its web site.
It is promoting itself as having ‘Austria’s longest season.’
The resort does not say if it is permanent end to year-round skiing.

It has been closing on and off over the summer months for the last few years
Tignes used to be open year-round, but stopped several years ago as climate change took its toll.
There is scheduled to be some skiing on offer on the Grande Motte glacier in the resort from 20th June to 19th July this summer, subject to ‘favourable’ conditions.

Zermatt in Switzerland is now the only alpine ski area that aims to be open year-round if the weather conditions allow.

Some Austrian glacier resorts also remain open:
- Stubai (May 17th),
- Kaunertal (May 25th),
- Kitzsteinhorn (May 25th)
- Moltal (tbc)
We have skied in Stubai near Innsbruck in the second half of May with fresh powder snow falling.

There are still some slopes open in Jasna in Slovakia.
Cairngorm in Scotland closed on Monday 4th May.
“I skied Cairngorm last week for the hell of it,” said the ski journalist, Patrick Thorne, to PlanetSKI.
“Was great fun and had slopes to ourselves, but unsurprisingly snow not great, partly as they don’t run first funicular until 10am by which time it was already well on the way to +10C.
“Amazing they’ve made it into May though.”

Other glacier areas that open at times in the summer are Stelvio in Italy and Saas-Fee in Switzerland.
Saas-Fee is mainly for race teams and is hoping to be open from 18th July to 31st October.
As mentioned earlier Les2Alpes remains open and goes through to July 5th.
