More Snow Has Been Falling in The Alps Over the Past Week Creating Great Spring Conditions for the Glacier Areas Still Open

Yet another Spring storm hits the Alps. It’s good news for the handful of resorts still open and welcome in the glacier areas that are set to offer summer skiing. UPDATED

Snow has been falling down to 1,000m in places as the temperatures drop sharply.

By the end of the weekend there was up to 40cm of snow in the Northern Alps.

It was the final weekend for some glaciers ski areas, including Kaunertal in Austria.

Here was Les Saises in the Savoie in France last Thursday.

The glacier resort of Stubai in Austria closed this weekend, Sunday 17th May, and has saw 45cm of fresh snow for its final weekend.

The Southern Alps have also done well.

Here’s the scene Les2Alpes in France that remains open for skiing and snowboarding.

The images were taken on Tuesday 12th May.

“Needless to say, all this new snow is great news for the Alpine glaciers, many of which risked looking very threadbare early in the summer after what had, until now, been an exceptionally dry spring,” said the alpine weather expert, Fraser Wilkin from weathertoski.co.uk last week.

“This late wintry spell will delay the thaw at altitude, but it does not by any means guarantee that snow conditions on the few glaciers planning to be open mid-summer (e.g. Saas-Fee, Zermatt) will be in great condition.

“Indeed, it looks likely that the weather in the Alps may turn hot again later with above average temperatures locked in for some time.”
