US Ski Resort Turns on Snow Cannons as Wildfire Threatens

Steamboat in Colorado is the latest resort to use its snow making system to fight wildfires. NEW

They are being used to prepare the ground as the nearby Fishhook fire might spread to the resort’s ski area.

The fire started last Sunday, July 12th, after a lightning strike.

As a precaution the resort has turned on its cannons in the Sunshine area to wet trees and grass in order to create a buffer around lifts and other infrastructure in the resort.

41 snow making machines have been turned on in what the resort calls  “proactive precautions.”

The Fishhook Fire is several miles from the boundary of Steamboat Resort.
