Cairngorm Mountain Resort Remains Closed After Wildfire

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service remains at the scene using thermal imaging to detect remaining hotspots. It says this will continue for the foreseeable future, but some areas may open on Friday. NEW

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, SFRS, is using drones to spot potential flare ups in the Cairngorms National Park.

There remain deep-seated fires that need damping down.

SFRS has four fire appliances on site, with around 20 firefighters working alongside partners and helicopter support.

Planning is underway to potentially reopen the Glenmore area during Friday 7th August, subject to the continued firefighting efforts.

This may mean the access roads to Cairngorm Mountain Resort can re-open.

SFRS has emphasised that any adjustments to the cordon is subject to change depending on the conditions on the incident ground.

The fire started over three weeks ago on July 15th.

We reported on the battle to contain and extinguish the blaze.

The Highland Council has held talks with affected businesses in the Glenmore area about the potential to re-open.

“When the area has re-opened, there will be further information and clear guidance on what areas are accessible and which are not,” said a statement from SFRS.

“This is due to firefighting operations, civil engineering operations on access roads and tracks, and the removal of previously felled and unsteady fire damaged trees.”

Any re-opening of the Glenmore area is only possible once all multi-agency responders agree that all contingencies have been taken to ensure the safety of the public.

Further updates on road closures can be found on the Police Scotland Highland & Islands website and social media.
