First Snow of Approaching Season Falls in North America

There’s been some snow in Canada with resorts around Banff preparing to open in the first week of November. In the USA it’s been snowing in a number of the ski states with snowmaking being tested. NEW

In the USA there has been some snow this week in Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana.

It has fallen in modest quantities and it will melt, but it is a sure sign that winter is on its way.

Some resorts are posting images and video of the snow falling.

2News reports on the fresh snow in Utah from the resort of Snowbird in the Little Cottonwood Canyon near Salt Lake City.

Most resorts are planning on opening from mid to late November.

There will be the annual contest to see which resort opens first and it is usually one of a handful in Colorado:

Will it be Arapahoe Basin, Loveland, Winter Park or Keystone this season?

“The mountain is getting its first dusting of snow, and winter is knocking on our door,” said Loveland on social media

“Ski season is getting closer, and we can’t wait to welcome you back!”

Killington Resort in Vermont on the east coast of the USA has conducted its first major snowmaking test of the approaching season.

It ran six machines at three locations last week.

The move reflects its desire to be the first resort in the east to open.

It said it will be “fully prepared to make snow whenever temperatures become optimal.”

It has not set an opening date for 2026/27.

Further north snow fell last weekend in Alberta in Canada with Sunshine Village, Lake Louise and Marmot Basin seeing some flakes.

Tentative Opening Dates:

  • November 6, 2026: Banff Sunshine Village and Lake Louise Ski Resort
  • November 7, 2026: Mt. Norquay

PlanetSKI’s North America reporter, Alex Cove, will be reporting from the slopes of the resorts around Banff as soon as they open.
