Former PlanetSKI Reporter Writes ‘Ski & Art’

Katie Bamber’s Ski & Art is the first book to bring together an international collection of contemporary artists whose work is inspired by skiing, snow and the mountains. NEW

The book is the third title in Lannoo’s acclaimed series, following Surf & Art and Skate & Art, it explores skiing through the work of artists whose creative practice is shaped by skiing and mountain landscapes.

Featuring more than 200 illustrations, the book showcases the work of 22 artists across painting, illustration, printmaking, graphic design, sculpture and classic alpine poster art.

Together, their work celebrates the breadth of contemporary creativity inspired by skiing.

Through in-depth interviews, journalist Katie Bamber takes readers into the studios and sketchbooks of each artist, uncovering the experiences, places and creative processes behind their work.

Katie Bamber was a news reporter for PlanetSKI from 2016 to 2019.

“The mountains have inspired artists for centuries,” said Katie.

“But skiing has inspired something else entirely: a culture, an aesthetic and a creative movement of its own.

“From ancient rock carvings and vintage travel posters to the countercultural energy of ski films and the work of contemporary mountain artists, the relationship between skiing and art runs deep.

“The mountains might provide the backdrop, but skiing provides the stories.

“The memories, the characters, the adventures, the friendships and the moments that stay with us long after the skis come off.

“Ski & Art is filled with images that celebrate this world, but it’s the stories behind them that really bring it to life.

“I wanted to get beyond the finished artwork and find out what drives the people who create it.

“What is it about skiing that becomes such a big part of who we are?

“And why do the mountains keep calling us back?”
