The Colorado Avalanche Information Centre has confirmed the death of a skier in the Boss Basin area.
After a winter of poor levels of snow the skier is the first recorded avalanche death in the state.
“We offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the skier,” the CAIC wrote in a preliminary report.
“Since the last storm, we’ve seen a spike in avalanche activity and human involvements, especially in Colorado’s Northern Mountains.”
“It’s unusual for us to make it into mid-March without any avalanche fatality.
“So we are grateful that that number isn’t higher.”
The avalanche risk remains at Level 3 (considerable) in some areas.
