Sebastian Hertner, 34, fell from a lift in Montenegro after a double chairlift detached from its cable in the resort of Savin Kuk and collided with the chair behind it.

He died at the scene.

His 30-year-old wife was trapped in the chair and was rescued by emergency services.

She suffered a broken leg.

At least three other tourists are claimed to have been left stranded in their chairs for several hours.

Rescue teams were able to bring those people down safely.

The former defender played professionally in Germany, representing clubs including 1860 Munich, Erzgebirge Aue and Darmstadt in the second division.

An investigation is underway with the mayor saying “We insist on a comprehensive and transparent investigation to determine who is responsible.”
