British Woman Dies in Chamonix Avalanche

The 45-year old was hiking with two other people including a mountain guide on Saturday when the accident happened. An investigation is underway. UPDATED

The accident happened on the Argentière Glacier near Mont Blanc at 5 0’clock local time.

The group was going up the Col du Tour Noir when the avalanche happened.

Rescue workers and a doctor were taken by helicopter to rescue her after being alerted by the mountain guide.

But they were unable to revive the woman and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have launched an investigation into the woman’s death.

The danger was at Level 3 at the time, meaning there was “considerable” risk of avalanche.

More people die at Level 3 than any other level.

The woman has not been named and a post mortem is being carried out.

There are forecasts of more snow this week and the authorites are urging people to exercise caution.

Meanwhile there have been the highest number of avalanches and casualties in North America for this stage of the winter.
