Iconic Swiss Summit Re-Opens to Skiers
14th March 2025

The Schilthorn summit above the Swiss resort of Mürren is now accessible to the public for the first time in 5 months. The first track of the two new cable cars started operating on Saturday.
It’s two years since the old cable car ‘Käthi’ carried its last passengers and began to be dismantled.
It was the start of the major Schilthornbahn 20XX project to upgrade the lifts.
Since then, old cable cars and lift stations have been demolished and three new pylons erected.
Skiers and visitors have still able to get up the mountain, but not all the way.
Limited space made it impossible to keep the top section, between Birg and the summit at 2,970m altitude, open while building work was underway.
In October 2024, the revolving 360° Piz Gloria restaurant on the summit was temporarily converted into a hotel to house up to 25 construction workers.
It was restored to its former use in mid-February and the restaurant and the Top Shop opened on Saturday 15th March when the first track of the two new Funifor cable cars started operating.
From the top, there are views of the Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau and more than 200 other peaks.
The iconic location in the Bernese Oberland was featured in the 1968 James Bond film, ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’.
PlanetSKI was last there in 2018.

The weekend opening is the latest stage of the Schilthornbahn 20XX project which saw a new cable car open between Stechelberg and Mürren in December 2024.
“Following the opening of the world’s steepest cable car last December, this is another important milestone for us in our project,” says Christoph Egger, Director of the Schilthorn Cableway Ltd.
“Over the past few months, we have been reminded once again how important it is for our guests to be able to travel to the very top and we are delighted that we can offer this again.
“So, it’s worth going back up on skis or on foot until the end of the season and taking a look at the new features. It’s very exciting, I can thoroughly recommend it.”
The summit will be accessible 365 days a year.

But there is still work to be done to complete the project.
After Easter, the old aerial tramway between Mürren and Birg, which ran alongside the new cableway during this winter to increase capacity, will be demolished.
Construction of the second track between Birg and the summit will begin immediately afterwards and, by the end of November 2025, in time for next winter, both tracks will be in operation with wind-stable cabins, each designed for 100 people.
The whole project is expected to be completed by Spring 2026.
