More than 500 people were evacuated including British guests.
There were no serious injuries.
The alarm was raised at 2.45AM and 460 holidaymakers and 60 staff were swiftly evacuated.
Bruno Charlot, the sub-prefect of Albertville, told local media that people were evacuated from the building in 15 minutes.
They were put up in the sports hall at Plagne Centre as a major event plan was put in place.
It is being seen a text-book rescue operation, and there has been praise for the emergency services.
90 firefighters battled the blaze.
Four people were injured and taken to hospital in Bourg Saint Maurice for the effects of breathing in smoke.
Three have been discharged.
Many fled the building in only their night clothes leaving the rest of their belongings behind.
“People were hurrying but they weren’t panicking, and we were out of the hotel in five minutes,” said British skier Paul Tucker, 76, who was staying at the hotel,
The fire is thought to have started started in a garbage container and spread to the wooden facade of the building.
The mayor of Aime-la-Plagne, Corine Maironi-Gonthier, said “this damage is significant.”
The property is used by the UK company Crystal SKI.
In a statement on Wednesday Crystal parent company TUI said: “We would like to apologise to customers whose holiday has been impacted following a contained fire at the Hotel Club MMV Plagne 2000 this morning.
“We can confirm that all customers were safely evacuated and have been moved to a nearby location where our team is taking care of them.
“Guests are being provided with necessary essentials needed including refreshments, food and clothing.
“We would like to reassure customers that their safety is our most important priority as we continue to monitor the situation with local authorities.
“We are in the process of arranging alternative accommodation and our team on the ground will continue to support our guests and provide regular updates.”

Many people are now trying to find out if their belongings have survived and how they might get them.
During the incident, the UK Foreign Office stated:
“There is an ongoing incident following a fire on April 9 in the ski resort of La Plagne, in the Alps.
“If you are in the area or planning to travel to the area, follow the advice of local authorities and check your tour operator’s advice.
“If you require consular assistance, call +33 1 44 51 31 00 and follow the options to speak to a consular officer.”
The blaze in La Plagne follows a fire in Les2Alpes last weekend.
Flames were spotted on the roof of the residence La Muzelle on Saturday afternoon.
The property is managed by the Travelski agency.
More than 100 fighters brought the blaze under control.
Around 500 people have had to be found emergency accommodation.
No-one was seriously injured, and an investigation is underway.
