Four Areas in Alps Remain Open for Summer Skiing

Skiing & snowboarding is on offer, but the recent heatwave has had an impact. Snow though has been falling in places. Two areas closed at the weekend with one set to open later in July. UPDATED

Snow has been falling elsewhere at altitude in the Alps as the temperatures have dropped.

Les2Alpes and Val d’Isere closed their summer skiing operations on Sunday July 6th.

The Swiss resort of Saas-Fee is set to open for summer skiing on July 19th and preparations are underway for its summer ski and snowboard season.

Tignes was the last resort to open part if its ski area as it fired up some lifts on June 21st.

Its neighbour Val d’Isere opened earlier in June as we reported at the time.

Tignes has four weeks of operations planned from 21st June through to 20th July.

The Grande Motte glacier has slopes at an altitude of nearly 3,000 m.

Up to 20 km of glacier runs are available between 3,456m and 2,724m.

The lifts run daily until early afternoon, though the situation is dependent on the snow and weather conditions.

Areas now open in the Alps:

Austria: Hintertux

France: Tignes

Italy: Passo Stelvio & Cervinia (shared with Zermatt)

Switzerland: Zermatt (shared with Cervinia)

The freezing level in the Alps rose to well over 4,000m at the end of June/beginning of July as Europe was hit by a heatwave.

It was the first time that June had seen the entire Alpine range above 0C (32F).

The weather station at Colle Major (4,750m) on Mt Blanc recorded a maximum of +3.7°C on Saturday June 28th.

In Switzerland the government declared the second-highest danger level for large parts of the country.

The temperatures across the Alps are having a significant impact on the summer glacier skiing conditions but no resort has had to shut.
