There are some good late season conditions for the Easter break in the Alps after the recent snow. UPDATED
Monday 30th March
The unsettled weather continues in the Alps with more fresh snow set to fall this week in places, with cold temperatures.
Austria and Switzerland should see the best of it.
With Easter two weeks earlier than last year it is set to be a great end to the season in many ski areas.
PlanetSKI’s Jane Peel is in Mayrhofen in Austria.
“There are a few bright spells on a largely overcast Monday in Mayrhofen,” said Jane.
“Plenty of snow in this Austrian resort for Easter week and more in the forecast too.”

Jane is in Austria for the British Snowboard & Freeski Championships – The BRITS.
“Late season snow conditions have been superb this week in the northern Alps and will continue this way with yet more heavy snow forecast,” said Fraser Wilkin from weathertoski.co.uk.
“Snow conditions in the southern Alps are generally far more average for the time of year, but here too you can find plenty of good skiing, helped by the below average temperatures that have benefited all parts of the Alps in recent days.”

Much of the late-season snow that fell at the end of last week is remaining as there are continuing cold temperatures in the Alps.
Often at this time of year warm temperatures melt much of the snow that falls, but with the freezing level down to under 1,000m in places there is still good snow on the pistes with some excellent coverage.
There are some good conditions for the Easter ski breaks that are now underway, with the best of the snow in the northern Alps.

Here’s the scene at the glacier resort of Stubai near Innsbruck that is open into May and is a good choice for late season skiing.
The new snow has brought risk of avalanches.
There is a Level 4 (High) risk of avalanche in the central/northern Swiss Alps.

The weather is clearing and Saturday will be mostly fine, but cold.
There will then be a period of mixed weather with some snow in places.
“Further fronts will approach the northern Alps early next week, with the chance of some further very significant snowfalls for some northern parts of the Alps, especially in the north-east (i.e. Austria), ” said weathertoski.co.uk.
Thursday 26th March
The forecast storm in the Alps has started and winter is back after the recent spring conditions.

It is all rather different from Tuesday in the resort when a bird hit a power cable causing a short circuit that led to an outage and the whole lift system ground to a halt.
The town and surrounding villages also lost all power.
Snow has been falling today in Verbier in Switzerland.

Wednesday 25th March
The forecast snowstorm in the Alps has started.
As it approached we heard from our man in Tignes/Val d’Isere, Steve Angus:

“In the Alps roughly speaking, between 20-40cm of fresh snow can be expected above 1500m in the northern French Alps by Friday, with between 30-60cm in both the northern Swiss Alps and northern Austrian Alps,” said Fraser Wilkin from weathertoski.co.uk
“As usual, some “hotspots” will see a bit more, with Engelberg as likely as anywhere to hit 70cm+ at altitude.
“The southern Alps will see less snow although some areas will still pick up some useful top-ups, especially close to the border regions (e.g. Cervinia, Livigno) and even the Dolomites, with most of that snow coming tonight.
“On Friday, flurries should have died away from the north-western Alps but may continue for a time across more north-eastern regions, especially the eastern Austrian Alps.
“The southern Alps will be mostly sunny, but it will still be cold everywhere.
“Over the weekend and into the first part of next week, further weather fronts will affect the northern Alps with some additional snow in places, but not in the kind of quantities that will be seen from the current storm.”

It has been the calm before the storm today, as more snow is set to start falling in the Alps on Wednesday.
Today it’s been blue sky all the way in many resorts.

“This storm will bring significant snowfall totals across the entire northern Alpine region, including Austria – not something we have seen very often this season,” said Fraser Wilkin from weathertoski.co.uk.
“Between and , we can expect 20–50cm of fresh snow across the northern French Alps, and 30–70cm across the northern Swiss Alps and northern Austrian Alps,”
“On the whole, the southern Alps will see less snow during this storm with some places remaining dry (e.g. far southern French Alps) but there is a chance that the south-eastern Alps (e.g. Dolomites) could catch a moderate fall on .”
In the meantime PlanetSKI’s editor, James Cove, is enjoying the last sunny day for a while in Val Thorens in France.
Seems he’ll miss the sunshine.

The fresh snow will be very welcome as Easter approaches.
It looks like there could be ‘significant’ amounts of snow across the northern Alps.
We’ll keep you posted.

More on the snow conditions in the Alps shortly, but first we update from Canada.
Kicking Horse in British Columbia to be precise.
The PlanetSKI reporting team of Marie Taylor and Alex Cove is there.

“Kicking Horse was closed on Friday due to warm weather and rain on mid/lower mountain but that meant on Saturday there was 20cm of fresh snow at the top,” they said.
“Once you got to the section where it had rained we stuck to the groomers and it wasn’t too bad, if you went on the non-groomed stuff it was bulletproof.
“Towards the end of the day it got a little slushy but that’s always fun.
“Overall great day once again in The Horse.”

“There was also a freeride event going on so they lucked out with the conditions,” Marie and Alex added.

PlanetSKI spent several days in Kicking Horse last February on a Canadian road trip.
