Access Road to Ski Portillo Finally Opens
10th August 2026
The resort in Chile has seen 7m of snow in over three weeks with the only road in and out closed due to the threat of avalanche. NEW
It re-opened over the weekend but only to guests with a confirmed hotel reservation.
Much of the ski area is now open and there are said to be superb conditions for the fortunate few able to make it.
The snow started falling on July 14th and the storms have kept rolling in leading to record breaking conditions.
“While it’s been fun to watch the record breaking storms drop 23 feet of snow, we are thrilled to finally get our guests this week up to one of the most unique ski areas on Earth,” said a statement from one of the tour operators, Powder Quest.
“Thrilled for Ski Portillo, their guests, employees and tourism as a whole for the area.
“For the lucky few who made it up there earlier in the week, it looks like conditions were all time.”
Recently people were only able to get in and out of Ski Portillo by helicopter.

It has though come at a cost with much lost business as the resort was inaccessible and people cancelled.
The resort has lost nearly a third of its three-month winter season and the shutdown has directly impacted over 550 resort workers and their families, as well as a wide network of local vendors and regional tour operators.
For now though, things are back on track.
