The bodies of two Romanian climbers who have been missing since last week have been found in the Gran Paradiso massif in the Italian Alps.

The two climbers died after falling into a crevasse, ANSA reported.

After an extensive search operation their bodies were found on Monday morning at the bottom of a crevasse around 65 feet deep.

In 2025 in Italy, mountain accidents caused 528 deaths.

That’s an increase of 13% compared with the 466 fatalities recorded in 2024, according to the Italian National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps (CNSAS).

Last winter saw a high number of avalanche deaths across Europe.

There were 151 with Italy seeing the highest number at 40.

The annual average of avalanche deaths is around 100.
