Heavy Snow in Australian Ski Resorts

Resorts in Australia are enjoying the fresh snow & there has been some welcome snow in New Zealand. There have been further falls in South America. UPDATED
Last weekend parts of New South Wales saw their heaviest snow in decades.
Areas in the north of the state saw 40cm of snow – the most since the mid-1980s according to Australia’s weather bureau.
Officials said around 200 vehicles were stranded as roads became impassable in places.
The ski resort of Perisher in New South Wales now has all of its terrain open.
All 45 lifts are running giving access to 3,000 acres of terrain.
Thredbo has also seen fresh snow.
Parts of the neighbouring state of Queensland also saw snow for the first time in 10 years.
Further south in the state of Victoria there has been less new snow, but resorts look good as the season continues.
It has not been a great winter so far in New Zealand there has been some welcome fresh snow.
The main resorts of Mt Hutt, Porters, Cardrona, Treble Cone, Coronet Peak and the Remarkables have been relying on artificial snow.
Some South Island club skifields have not able to open so far this season.
Rainbow, Broken River, Craigieburn and Mt Cheeseman remain closed.
“A decent storm is still needed to get open,” said a statement on the Cheeseman website.
Mt Lyford and Hanmer Springs were able to open earlier in the season but are now closed due to poor snow.
In South America there has been fresh snow in Chile.

In Valle Nevado 90 athletes from eight countries gathered for The Andes Cup, that is part of the 2025 FIS Park & Pipe South American Cup circuit.
The international freestyle competition awards points toward the global circuit, helping athletes to earn quota spots for the World Cup and the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games.
Chilean athlete Dominique Ohaco too top spot in all the women’s freeski events, and Antonia Yáñez took all the wins in women’s snowboard.
Argentina’s Natsumi Kina had a strong showing in women’s freeski, while Chile’s Javiera Rojas also impressed with three podium finishes in women’s freeski competition.
In men’s ski, the competition was tight.
Cristobal Colombo from Bariloche, Argentina, claimed two victories while Dominic Bowler from Brazil and Christian Stokely from the U.S. also reached the podium alongside experienced Chilean skier Francisco Salas.
Salas made a strong comeback in the final event, securing a stunning victory in Big Air, positioning himself well on the road to Milan-Cortina 2026.
Chilean World Cup snowboarder Alvaro Yáñez took one win, while Argentine Fede Charadio earned two victories.

The international circuit now moves to Ushuaia, Argentina, where events will continue from August 20.
