More Glacier Ski Areas Open in the Alps

Kitzsteinhorn and Molltal in Austria open some slopes last weekend after fresh snowfall. It brings the total number of ski areas open in Europe to 14. UPDATED

The autumn ski season in the Alps is off to a good start after some fresh snow in the past week.

The weather in the Alps is now more settled, with mild temperatures and but sadly no fresh snow.

Austria and the eastern Alps has seen the best of the recent snowfall.

The Molltaler glacier area in Carinthia opened on Friday 10th October.

It stored a total of 300,000 m³ of snow at the end of its last ski season and it has been making snow thanks to the cold October temperatures.

We will have an update on the opening day later on PlanetSKI.

It’s looking good at Kitzsteinhorn that opened on Saturday 11th October.

“Snow conditions on the alpine glaciers are generally good, especially on the northern Austrian glaciers where the heaviest of the recent snow has fallen,” said the alpine weather expert, Fraser Wilkin from Weathertoski.co.uk, on Friday 10th October.

“However, with no new snow in prospect for quite some time, piste conditions may become more hard-packed or scratchy over the next few days but, all in all, conditions should remain pretty reasonable for the time of year.”

Glacier ski areas currently open in the Alps:

  • Austria: Pitztal, Hintertux, Stubai, Soelden, Kaunertal & Molltal.
  • Italy: Passo Stelvio & Val Senalis.
  • Switzerland: Zermatt & Saas-Fee.

In the Alps conditions remain cold at altitude though there is no significant snow in the forecast.

In Scandinavia the resorts of Ruka and Levi in Finland are also open.

They used snow stored from last season to open a few trails.

Norway’s Galdhøpiggen glacier  ski area remains open, with around 3km (2 miles) of runs and some fresh snow.

It comes as the season in the southern hemisphere ends with resorts closing in Australia, New Zealand and South America.

There has been snow falling in North America.

Here’s Sunshine Village in Canada.

No resorts are currently open in Canada or the USA, but some snow-making has begun in Colorado and the battle to open first is on:
