Swiss Ski Resort Closes Due to Climate Change

Braunwald in the canton of Glarus is ending its ski operations after a review of operations. A lack of reliable snow is the main factor. NEW

The key element of the study is the end of traditional ski operations from the 2026/27 winter season onwards.

The review said continuing “as before” was no longer possible.

The resort, situated at 1256m, is likely to focus on summer operations and offer alternative attractions in the winter months.

The resort has 26kms of slopes that were served by 10 lifts with the skiing going up to 1,901m.

It was primarily used by Swiss locals.

A lack of snow in the winter means skiing has been limited in recent years with little prospect of that changing in the future as climate change takes its toll.

The canton of Glarus has also pledged support for future plans for the resort through its funding schemes.

It is being examined whether funds could be made available under the New Regional Policy from the federal government and the canton.

The process of developing a plan for the future is expected to take around six months.
