The 29-year old man was caught by an avalanche above the town of Ceillac while climbing in the southern French Alps. It is the first fatality caused by an avalanche this season. NEW

Highlands and Islands Enterprise, owners of Cairngorm ski resort in Scotland, have said that the repairs to the funicular are on schedule and the funicular will reopen this winter.
