FIS President Re-elected as Some Ski Nations Boycott Vote in Protest

In an uncontested election the current President of the International Ski Federation Johan Eliasch was voted back in, but there was no option on the ballot form to vote against him. Some nations, led by Croatia, walked out in protest. Austria, Switzerland Germany and others refused to participate in the vote with 40% of delegates abstaining. UPDATED

Crans-Montana Awarded 2027 Alpine World Ski Championships

The Swiss resort was up against Narvik in Norway, Soldeu in Andorra and the German ski resort of Garmish-Partenkirchen.  The World Championship venues for Nordic, Ski Jumping, Snowboard Freestyle and Freeski have also been announced. UPDATED

World Record for Longest Rail Slide

The Swedish skier, Jesper Tjäder,  has broken the world-record for the longest rail slide –  154.49 meters. Check out the video.

Lake Tahoe Clean Up Ends

The 72-mile shoreline of the Californian lake has been cleaned in a project that started in May 2021. Lamposts, phones and engagements rings were found.

Venues for 2027 Snowsports World Championships Announced Today

Decision Day is Wednesday, 25th May. Seven candidates are bidding to host the 2027 FIS World Ski Championships in Alpine skiing, Nordic, Ski Jumping and Snowboard, Freestyle and Freeski. UPDATED

Mammoth Mountain Open Into June

Face Masks No Longer Required on Flights & Airports in the EU

Two British Brothers Lucky to be Alive After La Plagne Avalanche

One was buried under the snow for 15 minutes while the other managed to free himself. 50 people were involved in the rescue operation on Saturday. On Sunday a skier was dug out of an avalanche in Tignes. UPDATED

Inbounds Avalanche in Whistler Kills 34-Year-Old Man

The Canadian resort has expressed its deepest sympathy to the victim’s family & friends. An investigation is underway. It comes as three ski tourers died in an avalanche in Norway.

The PlanetSKI Snow Report

There are some decent spring conditions at altitude, but it is soft and slushy lower down with the warm weather taking its toll. Off-Piste Delights in St Anton

PlanetSKI reporter George Eykyn was in St Anton in March 2020 when Covid struck. His off piste course ended, the resort shut and he returned suffering from the symptoms of Covid-19. Now he’s returned to finish what he had started – the ‘Black’ class in the Arlberg Ski School.

British Snowboarder Saved by Phone Safety Feature in Crevasse Fall

41-year old Tim Blakey was riding on his own in a glacier in Saas Fee when he fell into a crevasse. He used an SOS feature on his iPhone to alert the rescue services.

Italy Lifts More Internal Covid-19 Restrictions But Travel Rules Apply

Green passes are not needed for ski lifts, mountain restaurants and other facilities.  A Covid vaccination certificate, recovery certificate or negative test result is needed for travellers entering Italy.

Vail Resorts Takes Controlling Stake in Swiss Ski Resort of Andermatt

It is the first time a US resort operator has made such a move into Europe and it will be watched closely. Vail Resorts says it will invest in the resort and work with the local community.
