The Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) begins in six mountain areas on December 11th and runs to mid-April.

The six areas are:

  • Lochaber
  • Glen Coe
  • Creag Meagaidh
  • Torridon
  • Northern Cairngorms
  • Southern Cairngorms

It covers the UK’s highest mountains, including Ben Nevis in Lochaber and Ben Macdui in the Cairngorms.

Its forecasts are used by hillwalkers, climbers and skiers.

Last season,the Scottish Avalanche Information Service had reports of 42 avalanches – the lowest number since it was established in 1988.
