The PlanetSKI Snow Report

There are now some fabulous Spring conditions in parts of the Alps as Easter gets closer. Head high for the best snow. UPDATED

Updated, Sunday 6th April

The sunny weather continues across large parts of the Alps.

The freezing level has been at around 3,000m with  temperatures exceeding 20°C in some of the lower valleys.

PlanetSKI reader, Liz Vizard, has been in Innsbruck.

There is still skiing to be had and then some city sights.

“Needless to say, spring snow conditions will be the order of the day with hard-packed pistes early in the day, softening at a rate dependent on both altitude and orientation, turning slushy first on low east- and south-facing slopes, and remaining firmest for longest on higher west- and north-facing slopes,” said Fraser Wilkin from weathertoski.co.uk.

The weather will remain mostly fine, though it will turn colder in the eastern Alps this week.

Friday 4th April

A large area of high pressure is sitting to the north of the Alps and is bringing plenty of fine weather.

We have reported earlier on the heavy snow in Austria earlier this week direct from Mayrhofen.

Over the next couple of days the sun will be out in the majority of alpine regions and temperatures will be a little warmer.

“The weather has been different in some south-western parts of the Alps though, notably in the Italian Piedmont, the eastern Aosta, and some adjacent border areas of both Switzerland and France all of which have seen some snow,” said Fraser Wilkin from weathertoski.co.uk.

“Snow conditions across the Alps remain very mixed, as you would expect for early April.

“At the start of the week, the best of the fresh snow was in Austria (with up to 50cm in places), but it is now in the south-western resorts.

“However, due to the strength of the sun, the benefit of fresh snow can be very short-lived at this time of year.”

PlanetSKI has also been out in the little-known French ski areas of Les Sybelles and Val d’Arly in the last week for a spot of Spring skiing.

Some are enjoying more than just skiing at this time of year.

PlanetSKI reader, Liz Vizard, is currently on  Spring break in Innsbruck and has send us these images looking down on the city from resort of Patscherkofel.
