THE SNOW SETTLES

Snow has finally been falling in parts of the Alps. Austria had the lion’s share with more than 50cm in places but other parts have seen it too and it has also been very cold. Check out the latest. UPDATED

SNOW IS FALLING IN THE ALPS!

Parts of Austria have seen more than half a metre though some of the main French resorts are missing out. Italy is good in places and there is some in Switzerland which saw its driest December for more than 150 years. UPDATED

It’s wall to wall sunshine across the Alps but it’s cold enough to make snow and some change is on its way. It will be very welcome as winter is yet to start in many places. UPDATED

SNOW IN THE ALPS!

There’s been some significant snowfall, but it’s been very localised. Much of the Alps awaits a decent fall as Xmas and New Year approach, though conditions remain good at high altitude. UPDATED

It’s a mixed picture across the Alps with more snow needed in many places as Xmas aproaches. There is some good on piste skiing at altitude & generally it’s better than this time last year. UPDATED

HEAVY SNOW CONTINUES IN NORTH AMERICA

The USA and Canada are the places to be for powder snow. After a poor start in November there has been continuous snow in some of the major resorts. In Canada it’s been the longest cold snap for 20 years in places. UPDATED

THE SNOW CANNONS ARE SWITCHED ON

Thousands upon thousands of cannons are switched on across the Alps as the temperatures drop but sadly no snow falls. It is poor low down in ski resorts but there is much better news at altitude. NEW

SNOW ARRIVES IN NORTH AMERICA

Just as Europe prays for more snow it has been falling heavily in the USA and Canada. It comes after a generally poor start to winter across the pond.UPDATED

MORE SNOW NEEDED IN THE ALPS

There remains good snow at altitude in the Alps but warmer temperatures and rain have ruined it lower down. With Xmas approaching concerns are rising. UPDATED

THE WEBCAMS DON’T LIE

It’s early December and Christmas is coming – a little too soon for alpine resorts which have suffered a dramatic thaw since the November snowstorms.

SNOW CONCERNS ARE GROWING

Not for the high altitude resorts but for the lower ones. It is perhaps too early to press the panic button but many resorts are scheduled to open in a few weeks and there is little snow at many. UPDATED

With December starting all eyes are looking at the snow conditions with the season already underway in places. It is a mixed picture across the Alps and worries are growing at some resorts. UPDATED

BRITON AMONG TWO DEAD IN AUSTRIA AVALANCHE

The men were caught in an avalanche in Obergurgl in the Tirol on Saturday. A Dutchman died at the time while the British man was flown to hospital where he died from his injuries on Sunday. With other avalanche accidents caution is urged. UPDATED

MIXED CONDITIONS FOR THANKSGIVING

Today is Thanksgiving Day in the USA, the traditonal start to the ski season for many. Conditions have been very poor in the USA so far but some snow has fallen. NEW

FIRST US RESORT OPENS

Arapahoe Basin in Colorado fired up its first lift on Friday for the start of the winter season. 3,000 turned out and other US resorts plan to follow soon.

THE SEASON STARTS

We are in the glacier resort of Stubai in the Tirol in Austria. It is the resort’s busiest time of year with thousands and thousands out enjoying the snow.

Slovenia's Primož Roglič is the favourite to win the Tour de France and he currently wears the yellow jersey.

Roglic is a former ski jumper who only made the switch to cycling in his early 20s.
